Leprechaun Trap Ideas for Kids | St. Patrick’s Day Activities

St. Patrick’s Day is pure magic when you have kids.

If you are searching for easy leprechaun trap ideas for kids, this is one of our favorite traditions. Whether you are planning something fun at home or looking for St. Patrick’s Day activities for kids in the classroom, leprechaun traps never disappoint.

Between glitter trails, tiny gold coins, and the excitement of catching a sneaky leprechaun, the anticipation is real. And the memories last.

Easy Leprechaun Trap Ideas for Kids

This leprechaun trap was a second grade homework assignment and one of our favorite St. Patrick’s Day crafts. My son’s teacher sent home a list of easy leprechaun trap ideas for kids, but my little guy had his own plan. He wanted to turn ours into a pretend leprechaun park with a shiny gold slide.

We wrapped a shipping box in green wrapping paper and turned it into the base of our trap. A rainbow and gold coin path led toward the pot of gold, and signs that said “Free Slide” and “Follow the Arrows” helped lure the leprechaun inside.

We made a big mess putting it together. The more glitter, confetti, and shamrocks, the better. That was our rule.

My kids were 100% certain they were going to capture a leprechaun with this trap. My son even sprinkled Lucky Charms marshmallows down the slide to entice the little green guy inside.

The best part was watching the excitement build as we added each detail. Tiny ladders, sparkles everywhere, and handmade signs made it feel official.

Every time we stepped back, we added just one more thing. A few more shamrocks. A little more glitter. A longer gold coin path. It was messy and magical all at once.

Don’t Forget the Leprechaun Hats

Now that you are done looking for easy leprechaun trap ideas, have you ever made leprechaun hats? Not for your kids to wear, but hats for the actual “REAL” leprechauns. They are so fun and kids LOVE them.

To make the hats, you will need Styrofoam cups and markers. I used 8 oz cups. Let your kids decorate the cups, then leave the hats out for the leprechauns overnight. That is when the magic happens.

During the night, the leprechauns will visit and “magically” shrink the hats so they will fit even the tiniest leprechauns. You will need to do a little leprechaun magic of your own, so plan to pop them in the oven once the kids are in bed and the house is quiet. If you are a teacher, you will want to take them home so you can handle the shrinking magic overnight.

The next day, whether they are coming back to school or waking up at home, discovering the tiny leprechaun hats waiting feels like pure magic.

Tip: Keebler E.L. Fudge Cookies work perfectly for this because they look like tiny leprechauns and can stand up on their own. Not to mention, they are delicious!

Shrinking Leprechaun Hat Directions

  1. Decorate the Styrofoam cups with markers. This part can be a bit messy!
  2. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Place 3 – 4 Styrofoam cups upside down on a cookie sheet. Leave plenty of space between each cup so they don’t stick together.
  4. Put the cookie sheet in the center of the oven.
  5. Keep a close eye on the cups while they shrink. This part is super cool.
  6. Take them out after a minute or so when they stop moving. Be careful and do not leave them in too long or they will burn.
  7. Once cooled, place the tiny hats on Keebler E.L. Fudge Cookies.
